Love FLAMES Calculator – Discover Your Relationship Status

Advanced Love FLAMES Calculator

The Advanced Love FLAMES Calculator brings the classic schoolyard FLAMES game to life in a clean, instant online tool. You enter two names — yours and another person’s — and the calculator works through the traditional FLAMES algorithm to land on one of six possible relationship outcomes: Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemy, or Siblings. Each result comes with a colourful, personality-filled description that adds to the fun. Your result is displayed on a themed relationship card and backed by a full breakdown table showing both names, the common letter count, the FLAMES sequence used, and the final outcome — giving you a transparent look at exactly how the result was reached. A “Try Another Pair” button clears everything so you can test a new combination right away.

The Formula Behind It

The FLAMES method is a letter-cancellation algorithm that dates back generations as a pen-and-paper game. Here’s the exact process the calculator follows:

Step 1 — Remove common letters: Write out both names in lowercase and cancel out every letter that appears in both names, matching one occurrence at a time. What remains are the unmatched letters.

Step 2 — Count the remaining letters: Add up the total number of unmatched letters across both names combined.

Remaining Letter Count = (Letters in Name 1 + Letters in Name 2) − (2 × Count of shared letters)

For example, with “John” and “Jane”: shared letters are j, n, and a (one each) → 4 + 4 − (2 × 3) = 2 remaining letters

Step 3 — Eliminate letters from FLAMES: Starting with the full word F-L-A-M-E-S, count through the letters repeatedly using the remaining count as your step size, eliminating the letter you land on each time. Continue until only one letter is left — that’s your result.

Because the outcome depends entirely on the specific letters in both names, the same pair of names will always produce the same result — which is part of what made this game so popular in classrooms long before smartphones existed.

How to Use It

  1. Click into the Your Name field and type your name — first name, full name, or nickname, whichever you want to test.
  2. Click into the Partner’s Name field and enter the second person’s name in the same way.
  3. Click the Calculate button to run the FLAMES algorithm.
  4. Read your relationship outcome on the result card, along with the playful description that accompanies it.
  5. Check the breakdown table to see both names, the shared letter count, and how the FLAMES elimination played out step by step.
  6. To try a different pair, click Try Another Pair to reset both fields instantly.

Why It’s Worth Using

The FLAMES game has been a source of giggles, gasps, and group entertainment for decades — and this calculator is the fastest way to play it without needing a pencil and paper. It’s perfect for friend groups who want to test combinations at a party, for anyone curious about an old crush, or simply for the nostalgia of a game that most people remember fondly from their school years. Because the algorithm is completely deterministic, there’s no randomness involved — the same names always give the same answer, which means results can be debated, screenshot, and shared with full confidence in their consistency. It’s a zero-stakes, maximum-fun way to spend two minutes.
