About Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesn't specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them.
Common intermittent fasting methods involve daily 16-hour fasts or fasting for 24 hours, twice per week.
Health Benefits
Weight Loss
By limiting your eating window, you typically consume fewer calories and boost metabolism.
Insulin Sensitivity
IF can reduce insulin resistance, lowering blood sugar levels and protecting against type 2 diabetes.
Cellular Repair
When fasting, your body initiates cellular repair processes like autophagy.
Heart Health
May improve various heart disease risk factors including blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Brain Health
May increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), aiding brain health and preventing neurodegenerative diseases.
Fasting Protocol Details
16:8 Method
Fast for 16 hours each day, restricting your eating window to 8 hours. Most commonly, people skip breakfast and eat from noon to 8 PM.
18:6 Method
Fast for 18 hours with a 6-hour eating window. This typically means eating between 12 PM and 6 PM only, skipping breakfast and evening snacks.
20:4 Method (Warrior Diet)
Fast for 20 hours and eat within a 4-hour window. This is more challenging but can be effective for those adapted to fasting.
OMAD (One Meal A Day)
The most restrictive form of daily intermittent fasting. You eat just one meal per day, typically within a one-hour window.
5:2 Diet
Eat normally for 5 days of the week, then restrict calories to 500-600 per day for the other 2 non-consecutive days (typically Monday and Thursday).
Custom Protocol
Design your own fasting schedule based on your lifestyle and goals. Some people prefer 14:10 or other variations that fit their daily routine.
What Does This Calculator Do?
Intermittent fasting is one of the most popular and research-backed approaches to weight management and metabolic health — but getting started can feel confusing when you’re not sure which protocol fits your lifestyle or exactly when your eating and fasting windows should fall each day. This Intermittent Fasting Calculator takes care of both. You choose your fasting protocol, set the time your fast begins, and instantly get a clear, personalized schedule showing exactly when to fast and when to eat — visualized on a 24-hour timeline so there’s no ambiguity about what your day should look like.
What sets this tool apart from a basic time calculator is the real-time progress tracker built into it. Once your schedule is generated, the tracker tells you whether you’re currently in your fasting window or eating window, how far through your current phase you are as a percentage, and exactly how much time is remaining — updated live as time passes. It’s the difference between just knowing your schedule on paper and actually being able to monitor your fast in real time throughout the day.
The tool supports six protocols covering the full range of popular intermittent fasting approaches, plus a fully custom option for anyone who prefers a different fasting-to-eating ratio than the standard presets.
The Fasting Protocols
Each protocol is based on a specific ratio of fasting hours to eating hours within a 24-hour day. Here’s what each one involves:
16:8 — Fast for 16 hours, eat within an 8-hour window. The most widely practiced form of daily intermittent fasting. Most people skip breakfast and eat from around noon to 8 PM, which fits naturally into a typical daily schedule without much disruption.
18:6 — Fast for 18 hours, eat within a 6-hour window. A slightly more intensive version of the 16:8, typically meaning eating between noon and 6 PM only. Suitable for people who have already adapted to 16:8 and want to extend their fast.
20:4 (Warrior Diet) — Fast for 20 hours, eat within a 4-hour window. Significantly more restrictive and best suited for people who are already comfortable with extended fasting. The eating window is typically in the late afternoon or evening.
OMAD (One Meal A Day) — Fast for 23 hours with a single 1-hour eating window each day. The most restrictive daily fasting protocol. Best approached after building up experience with shorter fasting windows.
5:2 Diet — Eat normally for 5 days of the week and restrict calories to 500–600 on the other 2 non-consecutive days. Unlike the daily time-restricted protocols above, this is a weekly pattern rather than a daily one.
Custom — Build your own fasting schedule using the slider to set your preferred fasting hours (12–23 hours). The eating hours are calculated automatically to fill the remaining time in the 24-hour day.
How the Schedule Is Calculated
For all daily protocols (16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD, and Custom), the schedule works as follows:
Eating Window Start = Fasting Start Time + Fasting Hours
Eating Window End = Eating Window Start + Eating Hours
For example, with a 16:8 protocol and a fasting start time of 8:00 PM:
- Fasting Window = 8:00 PM to 12:00 PM (next day) — 16 hours
- Eating Window = 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM — 8 hours
The timeline visualization maps these two windows across a full 24-hour clock, with the fasting period shown in indigo and the eating period shown in green, so the split is immediately clear at a glance.
The real-time progress tracker compares the current time against your schedule to determine which phase you’re in and calculates the percentage of that phase completed:
Progress % = (Time Elapsed in Current Phase ÷ Total Phase Duration) × 100
How to Use It
Setting up your schedule takes under a minute:
- Select your Fasting Protocol — click any of the protocol cards (16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD, 5:2, or Custom)
- If you chose Custom, adjust the Fasting Hours slider (12–23 hours) — eating hours update automatically
- Set your Fasting Start Time — enter the time your fast begins each day (e.g., 8:00 PM)
- Click Calculate Schedule
- Review your fasting window, eating window, and the 24-hour timeline visualization
- Check the Progress Tracker to see your current status, percentage complete, and time remaining in real time
Why It’s Worth Using
The hardest part of intermittent fasting for most people isn’t the fasting itself — it’s keeping track of where they are in their schedule throughout the day, especially in the early weeks before the routine becomes second nature. Knowing you started your fast at 8 PM is one thing; knowing it’s currently 10 AM and you have 2 hours left until your eating window opens is much more useful and motivating.
The protocol selection also helps people who are new to intermittent fasting understand what each approach actually involves before committing to one. The educational breakdown on each method — including the 5:2 approach which works very differently from the daily time-restricted protocols — helps you make an informed choice based on your lifestyle rather than just picking the most popular option.
The custom protocol is particularly valuable for people who’ve experimented and found that a non-standard split — say, 14:10 or 15:9 — fits their schedule and hunger patterns better than the preset options. Having the flexibility to dial in your own ratio while still getting the full schedule visualization and real-time tracker means the tool adapts to you rather than forcing you into a box.
