What Does This Calculator Do?

Before you can make sense of any diet plan, weight loss goal, or nutrition strategy, there’s one number you really need to know: how many calories does your body burn just to keep itself alive? That number is your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR — the minimum amount of energy your body needs at complete rest to maintain all its basic functions, from breathing and circulation to cell repair and temperature regulation. Everything else — how much you eat, how much you exercise, whether you lose or gain weight — builds on top of this baseline.

This BMR Calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, widely regarded as the most accurate formula available for estimating BMR in the general population, to calculate your personal baseline calorie requirement. It takes into account your gender, age, weight, and height — all four of which meaningfully affect how many calories your body needs at rest — and gives you your BMR expressed in kilocalories per day.

But knowing your BMR in isolation is only half the picture. Your actual daily calorie needs depend on how active you are on top of that baseline. The Formula Behind It

The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation calculates BMR differently for men and women, since body composition and metabolic rates differ between the two:

For Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + 5

For Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161

For example, a 30-year-old man who weighs 75 kg and stands 175 cm tall:

  • BMR = (10 × 75) + (6.25 × 175) − (5 × 30) + 5
  • BMR = 750 + 1093.75 − 150 + 5
  • BMR = 1,698.75 kcal/day

For a 28-year-old woman who weighs 60 kg and stands 163 cm tall:

  • BMR = (10 × 60) + (6.25 × 163) − (5 × 28) − 161
  • BMR = 600 + 1018.75 − 140 − 161
  • BMR = 1,317.75 kcal/day

For imperial inputs, the calculator first converts weight and height before applying the formula:

  • Weight: lbs ÷ 2.2046 = kg
  • Height: inches × 2.54 = cm

Once BMR is determined, daily calorie needs are calculated by multiplying BMR by an Activity Multiplier (TDEE) for each level:

Using the male example above with a BMR of 1,698.75:

  • Sedentary: 1,698.75 × 1.2 = 2,038.5 kcal/day
  • Moderately Active: 1,698.75 × 1.55 = 2,633.1 kcal/day
  • Extremely Active: 1,698.75 × 1.9 = 3,227.6 kcal/day

Why It’s Worth Using

Most people either don’t know their BMR at all or work from a vague, generic figure that doesn’t account for their specific body. Eating “around 2,000 calories” as a rough target might be appropriate for one person and completely wrong for another — because BMR varies significantly with age, gender, height, and weight. A 25-year-old man who is 185 cm tall has a very different calorie baseline than a 50-year-old woman who is 158 cm tall, and treating both with the same number leads to poor outcomes in either direction.

Knowing your BMR gives you a scientifically grounded starting point for any nutrition or fitness goal. If you want to lose weight, you need to eat below your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) — and you can only calculate that from your BMR. If you want to gain muscle, you need a calorie surplus above your TDEE. If you want to maintain your current weight, your TDEE is exactly the number you’re aiming to match.
